Synopsis & Historical Value

Paljas & Die storie van Klara Viljee: Die filmdraaiboeke gathers two Afrikaans film screenplays by Chris Barnard in a single volume, published by Tafelberg in Cape Town. The first title accompanies the 1997 film Paljas, directed by Katinka Heyns, with Barnard as screenwriter.

Paljas follows a stationmaster's family at a remote railway halt, drawn together when a circus train brings a clown into their lives. The film is set in the rural town of Toorwater. South Africa selected it as its submission for the foreign-language Oscar at the 70th Academy Awards.

The second screenplay, Die storie van Klara Viljee, tells of a woman who has a house built behind a dune to shut out the sea she blames for taking those she loved, and of the townspeople who wonder at her choice. Together the two scripts show the quiet, character-driven storytelling of late-1990s Afrikaans cinema.

This copy is a first edition of 1998 from the seventh printing of 2006. It will appeal to collectors of Afrikaans literature and film history.
