Synopsis & Historical Value

Moleste op Keurboslaan is a school story from the Keurboslaan series, published by J. L. van Schaik in Pretoria in 1949. The series is set at a boys' boarding school, and this volume is numbered as the thirteenth in the Keurboslaan-reeks. The jacket illustration shows a schoolboy beside a sand heap at a building site, with other figures running up behind him.

The Keurboslaan books are regarded as a major part of Afrikaans youth fiction, and the series has been discussed in scholarship as bound up with Afrikaner identity of its time. The books remained in print for decades and were reissued in later editions, so the 1949 van Schaik imprint is of interest to collectors who want an early copy of the series in its original jacket.

A collectible copy of Afrikaans boys' school fiction, with its original illustrated dust jacket present.

Author Profile: Theunis Krogh (Stella Blakemore)

Theunis Krogh was the pen name of Stella Blakemore (1906–1991), a South African writer of Afrikaans youth novels. The name came from her maternal grandfather, Theunis Johannes Krogh, undersecretary in the administration of President Paul Kruger's South African Republic.

Blakemore also wrote under other names, including Analize Biermann, Stella Owen and Diem Grimbeeck, and she created the Maasdorp school-for-girls stories, which began in 1932. The Keurboslaan series is her best-known work, and reviewers of the time were reportedly unaware that its author was a woman.
