Synopsis & Historical Value
Mattewis en Meraai: Die kinders is the closing novella in Mikro's four-part series about the elderly Gonnakolk couple, Mattewis and Meraai Offer. Published by Perskor in 1983, it turns from the old couple to their children.
The story follows Tewis, Maria and Elisabet as the family slowly drifts apart after Meraai's death. Elisabet finds happiness, while her siblings struggle with love and inheritance.
The Mattewis en Meraai stories centre on Meraai Botes and many other colourful inhabitants of the fictional towns of Gonnakolk and Soetwater. They were adapted for the stage by P.G. du Plessis, staged by PACT in 1970, and later became a television series, which premiered in South Africa in August 1983, the same year as this edition. A pleasing copy for collectors of Afrikaans literature and popular Afrikaans fiction.
