Synopsis & Historical Value
Published in London in 1985 by Conran Octopus, Leading Men is a photographic celebration of Hollywood and the screen leading man, running from the matinee idols of the 1920s to the stars of the 1980s. Each actor is given a short biographical text alongside studio portraits and film stills drawn from the Kobal Collection.
Julie Welch's text and Louise Brody's design take a frankly admiring view of their subjects, and the selection leans towards sex appeal rather than strict critical ranking. The result is a large, handsome picture-book of studio-era glamour, introduced by a foreword from Jane Russell.
A generously illustrated volume for collectors of cinema history, studio portraiture and Hollywood nostalgia, offered here in its original dust jacket.
