The book is aimed at informing South Africans of the scope of farm attacks and to get the issue placed higher on the national agenda. The book will also help to mobilise public opinion in order to pressure the government to come up with solutions. In addition, the English version of the book (Land of sorrow) will be distributed internationally in an effort to garner the international community’s support for the protest action.

Land of Sorrow, written and compiled by the Deputy General Secretary of Solidarity, Dr Dirk Hermann, and the Assistant Chief Director of TAU SA, Major General Chris van Zyl, describes a total of 1 363 murders that occurred during 2 617 attacks on farms and smallholdings from 1990 to 2010. Owing to it shocking contents, the book has an age restriction of 18.

According to Hermann, the book pays tribute to the farmers and farm workers and their families who were affected by the attacks.
