Synopsis & Historical Value
Kultuurgeskiedenis van die Afrikaner (Cultural History of the Afrikaner), published by Nasionale Pers in 1945, is Deel I of a three-volume work. Its subtitle, Die eerste beskrywing van die Boere-volkslewe in al sy vertakkinge, announces its aim: the first account of the life of the Boer people in all its branches.
The work was edited by the professors C. M. van den Heever and P. de V. Pienaar, with the cooperation of 37 Afrikaans authorities. It surveys the customs, daily life and cultural heritage of the Afrikaner. The literary historian J. C. Kannemeyer described it as the only extensive and comprehensive cultural history of the Afrikaner.
The three volumes appeared in 1945, 1947 and 1950, and a single-volume edition followed in 1968. This is the 1945 first volume, a substantial reference for collectors of Afrikaner heritage and Africana, and a useful companion to any library of Afrikaans cultural history.
