On his expeditions through Southern Africa, Baines made rough sketches of scenes and events that interested him, made more finished watercolors from them as soon as he could and, when he considered it desirable, made oil paintings based on the sketches and watercolors. His diaries, kept mainly 'for the purpose of recalling to my mind the incidents necessary to be remembered in painting form the sketches', follow the same procedure. He made notes while travelling and wrote them up later and then prepared them for publication in book form.
