Synopsis & Historical Value
Kaptein Richard, published in Pretoria by J. L. van Schaik in 1956, belongs to the Keurboslaan series, a run of Afrikaans boarding-school stories for boys. The series is regarded as one of very few examples of the boarding-school genre in Afrikaans popular fiction for young readers.
The Keurboslaan books proved popular with Afrikaans readers and remain a recognised part of the country's twentieth-century youth literature. This copy, in its original illustrated dust jacket, will appeal to collectors of Afrikaans children's and youth fiction and to those assembling the Keurboslaan series.
Author Profile: Theunis Krogh (Stella Blakemore)
Theunis Krogh is a pseudonym of Stella Blakemore (1906-1991), a South African woman writer of Afrikaans youth novels. She was born near Lindley in the Orange River Colony in 1906 and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. The pen name derives from her grandfather, Theunis Johannes Krogh, an undersecretary in the administration of the South African Republic.
She also published under the names Analize Biermann, Stella Owen and Diem Grimbeeck, and some 66 of her books were published in total. Her mother, Emma Krogh, was a music teacher and the first woman to head a school in Pretoria.
