Author Profile: Sir Percy FitzPatrick
Sir James Percy FitzPatrick (1862–1931) was a South African author, politician, mining financier and pioneer of the fruit industry. Born in King William's Town, he died at Amanzi, near Uitenhage. He was one of the leaders of Johannesburg's Reform Committee, which conspired to overthrow Paul Kruger's Transvaal government in 1895–1896, and he later served in the Union Parliament.
His books include Through Mashonaland with Pick and Pen (1892), The Outspan (1897) and The Transvaal from Within (1899), but he is best remembered for Jock of the Bushveld. He is also credited with the creation of the two-minute silence observed on Armistice Day.
