Henkel, Irmin (1921 – 1977)

1939 – 1946 he studied medicine, during and after service in the German army, practising orthopaedic surgery. He was mostly, a self-taught artist. humour, which relaxed the sitter and enabled the artist to observe his characteristic disposition and expressions.

"I have been unable to decide whether to become a physician or an artist (painter). As a result of this uncertainty, I have pursued both careers..." Henkel, a German who emigrated to South Africa in 1951, was an orthopedic surgeon and artist, and this biography by his wife Margot spans his early years as part of the fanatical Hitler Youth, to his years in South Africa up to his sudden death in 1977, and includes a comprehensive list of his portraits, drawings and paintings in chronological order.
