Synopsis & Historical Value
Inside the Global Jihad, published in South Africa by Jacana Media in 2006, is the memoir of a man writing as Omar Nasiri, a pseudonym adopted to protect his identity. Moroccan by birth and raised in Belgium, he describes working as an informant for European intelligence services.
The book follows his recruitment by France's foreign intelligence service, the DGSE, and the assignment that followed: to infiltrate Al Qaeda's training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan. It offers an insider's view of jihadist networks in Western Europe and of daily life in the camps, and presents the author as abandoned by the Western intelligence services he served.
The work was first issued in London by C. Hurst & Co. in 2006, with an introduction by Gordon Corera, the BBC's security correspondent. The back cover carries praise from a former CIA official and a journalist. As with many accounts of this kind, the author's claims are not independently verified, and the book is best read as a first-person testimony of the early years of global jihadism.
