This book gives a detailed account of the events leading to the making of the movie `Gandhi'; right from the conception of the idea of making the movie that happened 23 years prior to the shooting of the first scene.

When Richard started working on the movie, the Hollywood sneered at him and wondered whether he could handle such a subject of controversial nature and of epic magnitude. But, even without much prior experience in directing, he was able to pull off a great film, thanks to his feverish commitment and the sense of duty developed in him during more than 23 years of the film in the making. There were many unfavorable events that made the project seems unlikely such as death of key persons to whom he depended so much for gaining valuable information for the project. One has to remember that Richard was less famous as a director than as an an actor when Motilal Kothari proposed him the idea of making a movie on Gandhi. It was not clear from the book why Motilal Kothari contacted Richard when there were many eminent and established directors who could be much better candidate for the role of a director than Richard. Both Gabriel Pascal and the great David Lean have thought about making a movie on Gandhi even before Mr. Kothari proposed the idea to Richard. Gabriel Pascal died before he could start anything on the project and David Lean wary of a movie on a man whom the world regarded as a saint got involved in his next project `Lawrence of Arabia'.
