Leaving the kraal and misty Valley of a Thousand Hills, Kenon has come to Port Benjamin in search of work. In Johan he finds a master and a friend. For a time it seems their unorthodox friendship can break down the barrier between black and white. But storm clouds are gathering and the forces of love and politics will explode into tragedy.
There are very few novels about South Africa which throw any light on the relations between the races. Here, however, is a first novel which deals with a situation involving two individuals, one white and one black. It shows the breaking-up of two worlds, one pagan and one protestant, and hints at the possibility of some future reintegration. The author is a Dutch South African, whose father fought against the English [sic] in the Boer War. His insight and his sympathies would in any case be remarkable, but are most striking in one who was born and bred on the veld.
