Synopsis & Historical Value

Published in London in 2001, Hitler and the Holocaust is Robert Wistrich's concise history of the Nazi persecution and extermination of the Jews. It traces the roots of antisemitism in Europe, and in Germany in particular, and follows Hitler's rise to power and the radicalisation that led to a programme of mass murder.

The book also examines who knew of the killings, how responsibility should be divided between Hitler and ordinary Germans, and the role of the Christian churches, including the Pope's silence. It closes with the legacy of the Holocaust in the postwar world.

Reviewers described it as an accessible and balanced general history, if grim reading. It is a useful, readable companion for anyone studying the Second World War and the Third Reich, offered here as a used collectible copy in its original dust jacket and carrying two dated signatures from a previous owner.

Author Profile: Robert S. Wistrich

Robert S. Wistrich (1945-2015) was born in the Soviet Union, raised in England and educated at Cambridge and London. He held academic chairs at London and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and from 2002 directed the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism.

He was best known for Antisemitism: The Longest Hatred (1991), which was adapted as a television series, and for Weekend in Munich, on Nazi art propaganda. His later A Lethal Obsession (2010) followed antisemitism from antiquity to global jihad.
