Synopsis & Historical Value
First published by Hamlyn in London in 1978, The Hamlyn Book of Great Escapes gathers sixteen of the most inventive and exciting escape stories, drawn from about four centuries of history.
The accounts range from Mary Queen of Scots' flight from Lochleven Castle to the prison camp breakouts of the Second World War, including Colditz, and the rescue of Danish Jews to Sweden during the German occupation.
The book is lavishly illustrated in colour and sepia, with photographs of the people involved where available. It makes an attractive, jacketed copy for collectors of military history and true adventure.
