Synopsis & Historical Value

Published by Alfred A. Knopf in New York in 1984, Gilbert & Sullivan: The Official D'Oyly Carte Picture History is a lavishly illustrated celebration of the Savoy Operas as staged by the D'Oyly Carte company. The company performed Gilbert and Sullivan for 107 years, from 1875 until its closure in February 1982.

The book follows the twelve major operas as they were produced over the years. It draws on theatre posters, cartoons, programmes, review clippings and photographs of performers and productions, with captions describing the operas and seasons.

Compiled by Robin Wilson with Frederic Lloyd, for three decades the company's General Manager, it is an official record of one of the great institutions of British musical theatre. It will appeal to collectors of theatre history and to devotees of Gilbert and Sullivan.
