This is an extremely useful and thorough guide to antique firearms for the general reader and collector. The central core of the book is an analysis of the evolution of the various types of mechanical systems used in the construction of firearms from their beginnings down to the end of the nineteenth century. Its emphasis on east European weapons and practice make it a valuable and refreshing addition to the already considerable body of work on the subject available in the west. Supplemented by schematic drawings and detailed diagrams of locks, butts, furniture and cartridges.
