François Alwyn Venter (1916–1997) was a premier twentieth-century South African author, journalist, and cultural figure. Born in Hopetown, he read at Stellenbosch University before launching a distinguished career in journalism across Cape Town, Pretoria, Windhoek, and Johannesburg. Venter later turned to farming in the Kenhardt and Vredendal districts, environments that deeply informed his gritty, realistic descriptions of the South African interior.
