Used - Good-The book is in a good condition and the pages are clean and clear. The binding is strong and firm. The DJ is faded with wear and tear but now protected with a Cellophane cover. Overall the book is still very good.
This translation of Hobhouse's first and perhaps most famous book (published by Methuen in 1902) was first published in 1923. This second impression came out 18 years later. The translator was Dr N J van der Merwe, who was later to speak at Emily Hobhouse's funeral service and to write a 60 pp appreciation of her ("Tot Nagedagtenis van Emily Hobhouse", Nasionale, 1926).
This book has a 1922 photograph of Emily Hobhouse as frontispiece as well as a translated copy of a 1903 letter to Hobhouse from Olive Schreiner, two pages of reviews of the original book, extracts from the Hague Convention, a translation of the preface to the English edition and a long 1922 preface by the author to the Afrikaans translation.
When the author's original [English] edition appeared in 1902, it was hailed almost in wonderment by critics in Britain and readers in South Africa (notably by Olive Schreiner). Schreiner almost demanded an Afrikaans translation, and when this finally appeared in 1922 Hobhouse was still alive to welcome it and to write the introduction.
