Synopsis & Historical Value

Die beste van Doc Immelman, published by J.P. van der Walt in Pretoria in 1994, gathers sixteen short stories that the author selected himself from his many years of writing. It is, in effect, Immelman's own choice of his best work.

The stories are set largely in Namibia and the hunting veld, and are peopled with colourful characters: adventurers, diamond swindlers, poachers and stock thieves, alongside tales of wild animals and the hunt. They capture a distinctive South West African storytelling tradition in Afrikaans.

A pleasing copy for collectors of Afrikaans fiction, Namibiana and hunting literature, and a good way into one of the best-known Suidwes writers.

Author Profile: Doc Immelman

Doc Immelman (Daniel Ferdinand Immelman, 1928-2013) was born in Goodwood, Cape Town, and died in Windhoek. He is regarded as one of the leading Afrikaans Suidwes writers, alongside Christiaan Bakkes and Piet van Rooyen, and has often been called the Hemingway of Namibia.

His first short story appeared in Huisgenoot in 1954 and his first book, Verhale uit Suidwes, followed in 1958. Among his other titles are Die bul van Kashimbo, Kurt Mauser, Die buffeljagter, Blits and Die beestrek.
