Frank Roberts has not only been an eyewitness but often has had a key role in the great events between 1930 and 1970 which saw the destruction and rebuilding of Europe. At the Foreign Office between 1937 and 1945 he was intimately involved with the events that led to the outbreak of war and in the diplomatic and political events of the war itself from Portugal to the Soviet Union working first under Neville Chamberlain, then with Churchill and Eden and later with Attlee and Bevin.
