Synopsis & Historical Value

The Complete Illustrated Works of The Brothers Grimm gathers nearly 200 traditional tales collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, presented in English translation in a single generous volume. Well-known favourites such as Hansel and Gretel sit alongside lesser-known stories, and the text is illustrated throughout with black-and-white line drawings.

The Grimms' Kinder- und Hausmärchen first appeared in 1812, and the collection was later listed in UNESCO's Memory of the World Registry. Successive editions were revised and, in time, softened for young readers, the seventh of 1857 being the last published in the brothers' lifetime. This compendium offers the tales in the form familiar to generations of English-language readers.

The Bounty Books edition of 2004 follows the design of the Chancellor Press volume of 1984. It is a handsome, substantial copy for the fairy-tale shelf, a gift, or a collection of illustrated children's classics.

Author Profile: Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859) Grimm were German scholars best known for collecting and publishing folk tales. Wilhelm wrote out the tales and revised each later edition of the collection.

Their other work included studies of Germanic legends, medieval texts and the history of language.
