The book is about the stone arch and iron lattice girder bridges that were built in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is about an English civil engineer, Joseph Newey, who was involved in the erection of nine stone arch bridges and about seventy iron and timber bridges during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The book has been written by an experienced civil engineer who has found it a fascinating experience to research the origins of these early bridges and the life of the man who was responsible for their erection. He has written this book to share his enthusiasm with both engineers and members of the wider public who are interested in the origin and construction details of these often very beautiful bridges.

The book aims to fill a gap in the historical record of civil engineering in South Africa and to suggest that old bridges are a part of our national heritage and are worth preserving before they are all gone forever.

The author has used original sources from several collections and includes photographs and reproductions of paintings of these old bridges, as well as portraits of people involved in their construction. A map and co-ordinates locate the bridge sites.

It is hoped that the book will lead the readers to look at old bridges with new eyes.
