Synopsis & Historical Value
Afrikanermag: Opkoms en Toekoms (roughly, Afrikaner Power: Rise and Future) was published in 1981 in Stellenbosch. It examines the political and economic rise of the Afrikaners, the nature of Afrikaner rule and the workings of the National Party system.
The central question is whether Afrikaner unity and power help or hinder change towards a fairer South Africa. The book is a reworked and expanded Afrikaans version of an earlier English-language study, and is the Afrikaans counterpart to Ethnic Power Mobilized (Yale, 1979). The back cover carries press praise and short author biographies.
Scholars continue to cite the work in discussions of Afrikaner identity and the post-1948 apartheid order, which makes it a useful primary-period reference for students of Afrikaner nationalism and late-apartheid political thought.
