Synopsis & Historical Value
Originally launched in 1977 and brought to its academic peak in this completely revised 1995 Third Edition, Africa has firmly established itself as the premier introductory text for African studies global courses. Editors Phyllis M. Martin and Patrick O'Meara bring together an extraordinary interdisciplinary roster of world-renowned scholars—including Toyin Falola, Ivan Karp, and Ruth M. Stone—to assemble a cohesive, deep analysis of this vast and complex continent.
The volume is methodically structured into four major analytical parts. Part I addresses contemporary problems, regional perspectives, and spatial maps. Part II chronicles the African past, tracking prehistoric archaeology through early empires, the spread of Islam, early European interactions, the colonial machine, and the complex mechanics of decolonization. Part III unpacks complex social organizations, systems of thought, popular urban culture, traditional music, and contemporary legal structures. Finally, Part IV evaluates post-independence economics, development crises, and the historical transition of South Africa. This out-of-print third edition remains a highly valued, scarce academic benchmark and an indispensable collectible asset for institutional archivists and collectors of advanced Africana literature.
