St Andrews has been from ancient time a home of religion and learning, it was known as the ecclesiastical metropolis of Scotland, and learned men, and men distinguished in church and state, resorted to St Andrews and were hospitably entertained by bishop and prior long before 1411 when the charter of Bishop Henry Wardlaw founded there the first university in Scotland.
