Reflections on the ‘bread basket of South Africa’. Includes anecdotes from Malmesbury, Moorreesburg, Yzerfontein, Darling and Riebeeck Kasteel.

On 31 January 1661, Corporal Pieter Cruythoff and fifteen men set off on an expedition into the interior north of the Cape. Approaching the free-standing mountain they thought it resembled a castle and named it after their commander.

The region surrounding the mountain of Riebeek Kasteel was initially carpeted with renosterbos which gave the land an enchanting darkish hue and so it was named `Swartland’.

Riebeek’s Castle captures some of the historic background, intriguing stories and endeavours of the people of this once untamed land.
