Synopsis & Historical Value
Published in 1996, Skeleton Coast documents an area once feared and shunned by seafarers because of its treacherous waters, shifting sandbars, and bone-bleaching desert wastes. Author and photographer Amy Schoeman covers all aspects of this mysterious coast's intrigue: its complex geology, elusive mineral wealth that attracted early prospectors, and the unique adaptations of desert plants and animals living in a land without water. The text also balances historical accounts of the countless ships and planes lost on this shore with humanity's battle against a hostile environment, using magnificent photographs that capture the desert and coastline in all its moods.
