Of Love and War is a genuinely original and moving memoir of World War 2 centred on the handwritten diaries of an Australian officer, Captain Adrian Curlewis who witnessed the fall of Singapore and spent nearly four years as a prisoner of the Japanese at Changi Gaol and on the notorious Burma-Thailand Railway. What makes this book unique is not only Adrian Curlewis's diary but also the interleaving of his entries with the letters sent by his wife Betty and the diary kept by his mother at home in Sydney. These give an intimate picture of a family parted by war- 1800 days of separated lives in Adrian's phrase. Edited by Adrian's daughter nearly 40 years after they were written, these letters and diaries recreate the joys and sorrows of the war years more vividly than any novel or television series and cannot fail to engage the emotions of the most hardened reader.
