THE MOST IMPORTANT CONTEMPORARY BRITISH PICTORIAL RECORD OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, WITH THOUSANDS OF PHOTOGRAPHS (MANY NOT PUBLISHED ELSEWHERE) FROM A WIDE VARIETY OF OFFICIAL AND COMMERCIAL SOURCES.

Good set of the largest of the three great published British photographic records of WWII (the others being Hutchinson's 'Pictorial History' and Odhams' 'The War in Pictures').

This massive compilation first appeared as 'The War Illustrated', published in 255 parts beginning with Issue I (16 September 1939) and concluding with Issue 255 (11 April 1947). The series was issued first fortnightly, then monthly (due to the shortage of paper), then again fortnightly in the final year. The partwork was then revised and reset with continuous pagination in eight volumes as here and subsequently reissued by AP.
