This is a caustic,sparkling book by a sophisticated German who because of his connections amongst Italian society and his fluent command of their language was sent to Rome as a liaison officer attached to Mussolini during the last war. He tells a story of personal adventures which is highly entertaining in itself, it begins with the surrender of the Germans in 1945 and relates how after escaping from the British, a Roman Catholic Cardinal helped him by allowing him to hide in a home for drug addicts.
