Townsend was a leading ace in the Battle of Britain and afterward. He became an aide to King George VI. He became involved with the King's daughter, Princess Margaret, whose older sister became Queen Elizabeth II. They would have wed but for but for royal , church and parliamentary disapproval; Townsend was a hero but he was divorced. This book by a friend of Townsend's gives the details and sets out the legal background which goes back several centuries. The book was written before the subsequent events which were so interesting. Townsend went on to become a great writer of military history. Margaret married a photographer who was not a hero. This was Anthony Armstrong Jones. He was ennobled as Lord Snowden so he would not be so unequal to his spouse. The marriage was a failure and ended in a divorce. Jones is said by some to have been bisexual. Margaret , in stark contrast to her steady sister, was a tearalong who died after a lifetime of parties, cigarettes and alcohol. Jones is still alive and a respected, artistic photographer as of this writing. They had two children. Townsend died in 1995.
