Basutoland Records 1833-1868 (3 Volumes bound in 4) by by George McCall Theal

Hardcover

Publisher: C. Struik Publishers 1964

Blue leatherette bindings with top edges stained blue. Facsimile reproduction of the 1883 edition. Very Good copies of this hard to find compilation of which Mendelssohn said: provides a complete history of almost everything connected with Basutoland from 1833-1868. Indeed, the publication of a fourth volume was only halted by the fact that the Cape Colony no longer held jurisdiction over Basutoland. Mendelssohn II, p476

Condition: Very Good. The original printed boards without a DJ are shelf rubbed and edge worn/bumped. These books were read and enjoyed but are still overall good. The books has no inscriptions and the binding is excellent. Tanning of pages. Rubber stamped on the front of all the books.

The colonisation process of Lesotho by Britain was phased over a period of over forty years from the early 1940s when Britain disannexed Lesotho from the Cape Colony and assumed direct responsibility. These volumes contain records of correspondence and other documents on the phase of Britain's colonisation of Lesotho, 1868-1972. The first volume is introduced with an essay by Motlatsi Tabane in which he uses the sources here-presented to argue for deeper examination of personalities and their significance for the colonisation process; against over-reliance on economic arguments.
