When the National Party came to power in 1948 on a tide of Afrikaner Nationalist fervour, it was determined to preserve Afrikaner rule in South Africa forever. So began one of the world's most drastic experiments in social engineering.
In a multiracial country whose white population was a diminishing minority, entrenchment of Afrikaner domination and privilege depended on policies that could only cause bitter enmity and division. For more than four decades, however, the resentment of their fellow South Africans and the outrage of the rest of the world failed to deter the Nationalists from the relentless pursuit of their aims.
Power Pride & Prejudice is the first comprehensive survey of Nationalist rule from 1948 until the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990.
Henry Kenney explains how apartheid was destroyed by the growth of a modern economy that made a mockery of the schemes of both the visionaries and the bureaucrats.
Henry Kenney studied at the University of Cape Town and the London School of Economics. He has lectured on economics and economic history at the Universities of Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and the Witwatersrand.
