Zan de Melker is a beautiful but eccentric woman. She is Zan of the unpredictable seizures and Xusan of the mysterious glass room. She's the Susan whose inappropriate sexual behaviour scandalises the community she lives in.
Set in the Karoo and in Amsterdam. Moving between 1950s and 60s (Graaf Reinet) and the recent past (Somerset East and Amsterdam)Afrikaans family saga and the effects of apartheid on them. Main character, Henk de Melker comes to Amsterdam to find out about and confront the secrets of his past. Breathtakingly written originally in Afrikaans and wonderfully translated by Miciel Heyns (who translated Agaat). Beautifully evocative of the Karoo and its landscape
