'The war artist who worked for the illustrated press was at the height of his importance during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. Talent in drawing animals was of paramount importance, and all the artists that Albert Carter discusses in this publication had this ability.

Art depicting the campaigns in Natal and the Northern Cape is prominent throughout this book, and readers will enjoy not only the art reproductions, but also the stories relating to the various incidents. Some are humorous, others touching, but all give a true interpretation of war.

The work of the war artists of the Anglo-Boer War is at last being given proper recognition and this reprint assists tremendously in this process.

Annotations by the Kimberley based Anglo-Boer War historian Steve Lunderstedt add to the value of the book and give an insight into the background of many characters mentioned, as well as about the various actions portrayed by the artists.' - editor's note
