Captain St Leger, whose Boer War started in De Aar, was a commander of a mounted infantry unit. He was in the column who rode to the relief of Kimberley in 1900, after which he took part in the occupation of Bloemfontein and finally the occupation of Pretoria.
He was a keen observer and his written anecdotes of the various actions in which he took part make fascinating reading.
More importantly, however, was his artistic talent which he put to good use in the production of many paintings during the march and the prints of which, in both colour and black and white, illustrate this most beautiful classic of the Boer War.
Little is known about the author, but it is suspected that he, like so many others of his generation, was tragically killed in action during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
