Herman Charles Bosman will be remembered as one of South Africa’s foremost short story writers, a writer of superb skill in characterisation, narration and command of language. His first collection of short stories, Mafikeng Road, has already assumed the stature of a South African classic and is together with the posthumous collection, Unto Dust, cherished by all admirers of great humorous writing. Of these stories, most of which are narrated by oom Schalk Lourens, the simple old Boer from the Marico District, who is really the embodiment of sly ambiguity, Roy Campell said in a letter to the author: This is just to say that I think your stories in Mafeking Road are the best that ever came out of South Africa.
