Hardcover
Publisher: Citadel Press, Landsdowne, Cape.
1973 Reprinted edition
Condition: Very Good. The original Maroon boards with gilt lettering on the spine, without a DJ are a little shelf rubbed and edge worn/bumped. This book was read and enjoyed but is still overall good. The book has no inscriptions and the binding is excellent.
This book chronicles the arrival of the Settlers of 1820 on the shores of Southern Africa; their location on the Eastern Frontier of the old Cape Colony as a buffer against the increasing migration of the Bantu tribes westwards into the Colony; their early pioneering efforts to establish themselves in the face of seemingly insurmountable hardships and obstacles; the narrowly averted collapse of the infant Settlement through drought, famine, flood, hostile invasion and war; and the eventual advance of its sturdy founders to peace, security and prosperity.
Over 100 illustrations and 3 maps, most of them reproduced from rare old prints. Also a Roll of Honour and a complete list of the original Settlers. Maps as end-papers.
