It follows the game well beyond its northern English heartland, with pieces set in countries including France and Ireland, and travels as far as the forests of Papua New Guinea.

The pieces are travellers' tales from respected writers on the sport, ranging from coach trips to France to far-flung encounters with the game. The book celebrates the often overlooked international side of rugby league with wit and affection.

It is a follow-up to Hadfield's earlier XIII Winters, and the two were later reissued together in 2009 as a Rugby League Classics volume. This 1996 hardcover in its illustrated dust jacket is a tidy copy for collectors of rugby league literature and sports writing.

Author Profile: Dave Hadfield

Dave Hadfield was rugby league correspondent for The Independent from 1990.
