Grobbelaar. The selection gathers early favourites among Afrikaans verse that tells a story, and it includes a full-page portrait of C.P. Hoogenhout.

The volume is illustrated in colour throughout by Annette Stork, whose pictures accompany the verse and give the collection the feel of a lavishly presented family keepsake as well as a literary anthology.

Grobbelaar was closely associated with Afrikaans folk culture and folklore, and this anthology reflects that interest in the older storytelling tradition. A companion volume, Die tweede gerf, followed in 2003, drawing mainly on older poets. This ex-library copy will suit readers and collectors of Afrikaans poetry and heritage literature.

Author Profile: Pieter W.
