It is an introductory textbook that teaches the basic principles of art while tracing the history of South African art from prehistoric rock paintings, through Eastern and Western influences, to the new art of the 1990s.

The book places particular emphasis on recent periods, with two central chapters devoted to modern Western-style art. It is illustrated and includes a bibliography, and it has been cited in specialist reading lists on South African art as a useful reference.

It was followed by a second volume, Art in Outline 2: From Rock Art to the Late 18th Century, published at Oxford in 1995.
