The one heritage success is perhaps the old iron framed Park Station, but that now stands isolated , unused and unloved despite recycling plans. Early wrought iron work was particularly successfully captured by Picton-Seymour in the woodcuts, and again facades mattered more than people. It encompasses the Fingo Milkwood Tree at Peddie and the graves of the Zulu Kings in the Emakhosini Valley. It ranges from the glaciated pavements of Nooitgedacht to the Doornlaagte Earlier Stone Age sites. In doing so, the author and his collaborators have produced an invaluable account of the contribution that the Historical Monuments Commission (now the National Monuments Council) has made during the past 45 years to the conservation of our culture and our nature – a colourful kaleidoscope of the history of South Africa integrated with the visible and tangible heritage of all the peoples of our land.

With an introduction by the State President, Mr. J. Fouche, and prefaced by a short review of the preservation movement in South Africa — initiated by the foundation of the S.A National Society in 1905 — the book has been compiled from the files of the National Monuments Council, Government Archives and many historical works and travellers’ descriptions. It contains as many as 260 monochrome and 12 full-colour reproductions of historical paintings, sketches and drawings. Many of these come from old travellers’ descriptions, but the majority are from the most important Africana collections in the country. The charm of this slender volume is that it captures in tipped in plates and scraper board drawings some of the architecture of the Western Cape. It is an artistic and romantic gem. If the 60 year rule applied to books as it does to buildings this title belongs in a "clearly should be preserved" heritage category. After all these decades I particularly like the composite drawings of the church spires of Cape Town and there are others of mosques and gables. People don't feature; facades and objects catch the artist's eye. The problem with this type of book of attractive plates is that the plates have a decorative appeal and so could be stripped to retrieve and frame these. Fewer copies of the book then survive. Picton-Seymour went on to produce the much more substantial study of Victorian buildings and made her mark in architectural drawings.

Stellenbosch Drie Eeue : amptelike gedenkboek

(Afrikaans text) by

Smuts, Francois (Ed) ; Baumbach, L ; Bigalke, R C ; Bouws, J ; Craven, D H ; De Jongh, P S ; De Vos, M ; Du Toit, P S ; Engelbrecht, E ; Fensham, F C ; Fransen, H ; Hanekom, T N ; Hofmeyr, A M ; Johnman, C K ; Kotzé, D J ; Le Roux, M J ; Loock, J C ; Malherbe, M ; Nell, W L ; Smuts, F ; Söhnge, A P G ; Van Zyl, D J ; Visagie, J C

Hardcover, ISBN 9780620039109
Publisher: Stellenbosse Stadsraad, 1979
Used - Very Good. 464 pages (complete) Wear to edges of Brown boards.

Beautiful centenary volume of the second oldest town in the Cape.

Beautifully illustrated book (black and white and colour photographs) written in Afrikaans. It's set in the 1870s in Bloemfontein and follows a solitary Dutch man who comes to South Africa, like many other Europeans at the time, for health reasons. The dry air of the veld is regarded as the best climate for those suffering with Tuberculosis. It raises questions of class, colonialism, language, death and dying. From the fly-leaf: “Can a white man, a settler from another country, become an African?” An epic novel infused with the spirit of Africa.

South African Schoeman makes his American debut with a novel of high purpose—one that movingly explores that other country that for his ailing hero is both Africa and death. As stately as a Bach fugue, the novel tells the story of Versluis, a wealthy Dutchman who travels to South Africa in the 1870's in search of a cure for his tuberculosis. The long journey from the coast to Bloemfontein—then capital of the Boer republic of the Orange Free State, and noted for its healthy climate—almost kills him, but he gradually recovers over the summer. The townspeople, a cosmopolitan mix, are solicitous, but Versluis- -affected by a lonely childhood and fears of dying—rebuffs their friendship and withdraws into himself and his illness. Nonetheless, Versluis is compelled on occasion to join local society: He dines with the hospitable Hirschs, a family that exudes vitality; reads poems for a German literary society; and finds himself increasingly drawn to Pastor Scheffler and his crippled sister. The town is surrounded by empty veld—symbolic here of the emptiness of death, and of Africa itself. It's an alien place, the Pastor suggests, for Europeans torn between two worlds who, unasked, ``brought civilization and dumped it as if Africa were some kind of trash- heap''—a place ``we see only at a distance, beyond the lace- curtains.'' Scheffler's sister, born in Africa, feels no such dichotomy; for her, Europeans must become Africans. Winter comes, and Versluis realizes he is dying, but he's strangely comforted by an encounter with a fellow-countryman. On a hill overlooking the veld, Versluis can finally embrace the emptiness without fear: ``The emptiness absorbed you, the unfamiliar land grew familiar— the journey had been completed.'' Born in Cobham, England, Sir Baker travelled to Cape Town in 1892 to visit his brother and was commissioned to design and remodel Groote Schuur. At the time, Groote Schuur (Dutch for “big barn”) was the home of Cecil John Rhodes and the residence was located on the slopes of Table Mountain.

After the development was completed, Sir Herbert Baker’s reputation as the architect of choice in South Africa was set. He travelled to a range of countries to learn more about other architectural styles and construction methods and thereafter returned to South Africa. Sir Baker settled back into designing, constructing and remodeling homes and other buildings for the country’s British Colonial settlers.

Thanks to his strong connections to governors and British Colonial leaders, Sir Baker decided to set up a permanent practice in South Africa, under the name “Herbert Baker, Kendall and Morris”. It’s through this firm that Sir Baker’s portfolio of work grew even more and he created some of South Africa’s most well known buildings.

Sir Baker’s influence on South African architecture is unparalleled. His design and construction influence can be seen in Rhodes University, the Pretoria Railway Station and many of South Africa’s more upmarket schools like the Roedean School in Johannesburg. Sir Baker would also go on to build homes and design homesteads for a number of wealthy mining magnates, which means that in today’s age in the upper suburban areas of Johannesburg his architectural themes and distinctive style still stand out.

THE UNION BUILDINGS

Perhaps most famously, Sir Herbert Baker was commissioned to design the Union Buildings in 1909. The very first building block for the Union Buildings was laid in 1910 and construction completed in 1913. It was after this construction project, that Sir Baker left for New Delhi in India, before returning to England. During his time in India, Sir Baker was instrumental in designing and constructing buildings for New Delhi, which would later become the British Raj capital.

And while the country of South Africa may be growing at a rapid pace with industrial developments and commerce dominating much of the skyline, there’s still a strong reminder of the influence of Sir Herbert Baker.
