After the war she travelled through the ravaged areas of South Africa and devised a successful scheme of home industries for young girls on isolated farms. Illness forced her to seek refuge in Italy where she remained almost to the beginning of World War I, and began her famous correspondence first with J C Smuts and then with Isabel Steyn. Her comments on the events of the day show unusual foresight. She was loved by the people of South Africa and admired by those like Mahatma Gandhi who asked for her help. She was a bit of a painter, a writer and an entertainer, and in spite of ill-health travelled easily between countries, even in the midst of the first World War when she went to Germany and hoped to obtain peace.

Returning to Europe after that war Emily Hobhouse put into a place a number of schemes to help the impoverished, but the cry of the children of Leipzig won her particular sympathy, and with the help of the Save the Children Fund and later the South Africans she devised a feeding scheme for them.

The South Africans so admired her that they clubbed together to buy her a little house in Cornwall, at St. Ives. By 1914, a confirmed pacifist, she felt passionately that civilians suffered more than combatants. Throughout the war she was anxious for a negotiated peace. In Switzerland, in 1916, through the German Ambassador—extraordinarily—she obtained permission to visit German-occupied Belgium and Berlin. A chance meeting with the German Foreign Secretary made her realize peace talks were possible. She put forward a plan to get talks started, to which he agreed, but in England she was snubbed by the Foreign Office. She worked tirelessly for the release of civilian internees and better food for Belgium. Her "Open Christmas Letter" was answered in a letter by 155 prominent Pacifist and feminist German and Austrian women. He would go on to write a prodigious 65 books in his lifetime. He was rewarded for this in 1953 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Yet in Britain his abilities as a writer were already widely recognized by the end of the 19th century. Yet oddly enough he had not excelled academically at school and it was only on his third attempt that he passed the entrance examination to the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst .

Before entering politics he went on to combine his military career with journalism and shortly after the outbreak of the South African War in 1899, he was contracted as a war correspondent for the Morning Post. He made his way to the Natal front where he was destined to become one of the highest-paid newspaper reporters in the world.

Much has been made of Churchill’s heroism. The exceptional courage he displayed when defending the derailed armoured train at Chieveley in Natal made his reputation. Yet strictly speaking as a journalist he was a non-combatant, but on his capture, the Boers treated him as a combatant because of his actions at the armoured train.

This was not an isolated incident of bravery for on other occasions, in Cuba , India and in Africa , his sometimes almost reckless courage had drawn widespread comment. On three different occasions during the Malakand campaign in India , he rode his pony along the skirmish line while everyone else was ducking for cover. He admitted that his actions were foolish, but playing for high stakes was a calculated risk. ‘Given an audience there is no act too daring or too noble’, he wrote to his mother, and concluded his letter by saying: ‘... without the gallery things are different.’

Scaling the wall surrounding the prison yard in Pretoria and making his way through enemy territory to Portuguese East Africa was not considered a particularly great feat by the British military. Yet his escape — he was largely unknown to the British people until then — was hailed by many as one of the greatest military escapes ever. His instant fame, to a large degree, came about because the war was going badly for the British Army at the time. A depressed British people needed a hero to bolster their sagging enthusiasm for the war, so Winston Churchill was their man.

He had the need to stay in the limelight to fuel his political ambitions and the best way to achieve that was by returning to the front as a journalist and part-time soldier after his escape where he continued to captivate the readers of the Morning Post with his dispatches, writing convincingly about his own and other’s front-line experiences.

His stories of how he miraculously escaped the bullets that whistled around him in Natal and the Orange Free State and how he rode a bicycle through enemy-held Johannesburg, ending with his triumphant returned to Pretoria where he helped to liberate his former fellow POW's from captivity, earned his newspaper a fortune.

The fact that the adventures he described sometimes did not happen exactly the way he related them didn't seem to bother anyone. William Manchester wrote: ‘Virtually every event he (Churchill) described in South Africa , as in Cuba , on the North-West Frontier, and at Omdurman , was witnessed by others with whom recollections were consistent. The difference, of course, lay in the interpretation.’

I set out to discover the real Churchill in those early years of his life. During this process I discovered many facets to this complex and controversial man. At times I felt like a certain painter described by Cervantes. This sage artist was asked, as he was starting on a new canvas, what his picture was to be. ‘That’, he replied, ‘is as it may turn out.’

So this, my account of how the young and extraordinary Winston Churchill became a hero during the South African War, is how it turned out."

Signed inscription by the Artist.

Armando Baldinelli by Albert Werth

Hardcover
Publisher: Gallery Twenty-One Publishers (Pty) Ltd, London and Johannesburg, 1974
Used - Very Good +. 127 pages (complete). Born in London in 1851, Selous led an adventurous life gaining a formidable reputation as a big game hunter, a naturalist, a member of the Zoological Society, a fighting man, the author of many books, a contributor of many features to the Royal Colonial Institute in London, and the writer of countless articles for magazines and journals. In 1890 Cecil John Rhodes appointed him chief scout of the Pioneer Column that he despatched into the African interior to settle Mashonaland, which afterwards became Rhodesia and is now Zimbabwe. Selous counted many famous people amongst his friends, including President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt who described him as ‘an absorbing and fascinating companion’. While indiscriminate trophy hunting is rightly no longer fashionable, A Hunter’s Wanderings in Africa’s is a legacy for those living now, for it records what Africa south of what is now Zambia to the Cape of Good Hope was really like more than a 100 years ago.

He writes of areas then teeming with game, of the indigenous peoples occupying them, Trek Boers and other hunters like himself. The seven plates of antelopes’ heads form a complete series, representing every species, from the smallest to the largest found north of the Limpopo River up to12° south latitude. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914 Selous volunteered for the army but was turned down because at 63 he was considered too old. But shortly afterwards the War Office relented when someone pointed out how useful Selous’ unsurpassed knowledge of the African bushveld would be in the campaign then being waged against the wily Colonel Lettow-Vorbeck in German East Africa. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the 25th Battalion Royal Fusiliers and during the next 18 months he saw considerable action winning a DSO in the process.

He was killed in action at Beho-Beho at the age of 65 while leading his men from the front. These pages reveal, as never before, the links between this secret information and the resulting moves and successes achieved by the Allies. On the one side Cecil Rhodes, perhaps the greatest British imperialist of his time – on the other side the Cape Afrikaners, part of the ethnic community which was engaged in a major war with that very empire at the close of the nineteenth century. Rhodes skillfully courted the Cape Afrikaners, despite his ardent imperialism and their autonomous colonial intent.

While the impact of British imperialism and capitalism set in motion a process of ethnic and political consciousness, it also engendered a desire to be associated with the British. Such was Rhodes’s charm that to some Cape Afrikaners he became a political hero, even an idol. Tamarkin successfully shows that the disengagement of the Cape Afrikaners from Rhodes was neither immediate nor inevitable. It was a painful and long process which was driven not just by the Jameson Raid but by Rhodes’s increasingly provocative conduct. This extraordinary relationship only finally finished in 1898 during the election campaign, in which Rhodes and the Afrikaner Bond fought tooth and nail for control of the Cape Colony.

Thomas Pringle in South Africa 1820-1826 by Pringle, Thomas & Wahl, John Robert (ed)

Hardcover, ISBN 9780582609211
Publisher: Longman Southern Africa, 1970

Used - Very Good+. In 1895 The Gold Fields of South Africa declared a profit of £2,161,778 – said to be the biggest profit ever earned by a limited liability company in the City of London to that date. Rhodes and Rudd were paid more than £300,000 as their share of the profits. But from that day the company’s misfortunes began. Instantly recognizable as the seemingly serene, cool and derached wife of Winston Churchill she had nonetheless shunned publicity throughout her life. In this biography her daughter, Mary Soames, throws light on her mother, writing of Clementine's 57-year marriage to Winston, her strongly held political views and a life which spans many of the major events of the 20th century. Clementine Churchill was the perfect wife for Winston. For 75 years she supported him through the triumphs, disasters and tensions which ruled his public and private life. As a young girl she had a strength of character and distinction of mind, allied to outstanding good looks, that attracted the young and impetuous Winston Churchill. The early years of her marriage coincided with the heyday of the reforming Liberal Government, in which Winston was a leading figure: she was later to describe them as the happiest of her life. Always Winston trusted her completely and she became a valuable counsellor and companion. Clementine was shy, passionate and highly strung, and her self-control was tested to its utmost in the turmoil of public life and in the no less harrowing family crises and the ever-present financial anxieties. But one facet of her life was steadfast: the love she shared with her husband, which was to sustain them both even through the most trying times.

The Churchills By Kate Fleming

Hardcover

ISBN 0297769758

Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson Ltd 1975

Used - Very Good. His mother, Maria Susanna Stegmann, was of French Huguenot and German Lutheran descent.

Murray was sent to the University of Aberdeen in Scotland for his initial education, together with his elder brother, John. Both remained there until they obtained their master's degrees in 1845. During this time, they were influenced by Scottish revival meetings and the ministry of Robert Murray McCheyne, Horatius Bonar, and William Burns. From there, they both went to the University of Utrecht where they studied theology. The two brothers became members of Het Réveil, a religious revival movement opposed to the rationalism which was in vogue in the Netherlands at that time. Both brothers were ordained by the Hague Committee of the Dutch Reformed Church on 9 May 1848 and returned to the Cape.

Murray married Emma Rutherford in Cape Town, South Africa, on 2 July 1856. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission's name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with Serving In Mission (SIM) in 1998 and continues to this day.

Through his writings, Murray was also a key "Inner Life" or "Higher Life" or Keswick leader, and his theology of faith healing and belief in the continuation of the apostolic gifts made him a significant forerunner of the Pentecostal movement.

In 1894, Murray was visited by John McNeill and Rev. Her obsession as a novelist was with the supposed dire consequences of miscegenation. As J. M. Yet this discredited outlook, so widespread at the time, did not prevent her from writing some good novels with genuine tragic pathos, such as God's Stepchildren (1924), with its haunted, ‘mixed-blood’ protagonist, Barry. Despite her racialism Millin was vehemently anti-Nazi and attacked Nazi ideology in The Herr Witchdoctor (1941). As well as many novels, including Adam's Rest (1922), The Sons of Mrs. Aab (1931), and King of the Bastards (1950), she wrote autobiographical memoirs, war diaries, short stories, and two distinguished biographies, Rhodes (1933) and General Smuts (1936).
