Very good green cloth hard back, The Jameson Raid was a collaborative effort between Cecil John Rhodes (the prime minister of Cape Colony) and Sir Leander Starr Jameson to overthrow the Boer government, which was headed by President Paul Kruger. Rhodes (a successful diamond mine operator) had a vision of all of South Africa under one British flag; however, Rhodes requested that the raid be delayed. The reader is given new insight into the lives of some of the leading figures in the drama that lies behind the founding and development of two of the greatest cities of modern Africa. Original in its approach, the book, as a result of intensive research, throws new light on the first English settlers of Pretoria who shared the Vicissitudes of the town s earlier years with the Voortrekkers, on aspects of early Johannesburg, and on such crucial events as the Jameson Raid and the discovery of gold. The saga is traced back to its very beginning when a small but valiant people trekked into the unknown and founded their own capital city in a new land. The essential irony of the Situation lay in the fact that this land was later found to Contain the richest gold deposits in the world. Joy Collier has illustrated this volume with a large number of her own charming and sensitive drawings of actual scenes, ranging from Robert Moffat s house in Kuruman and Andries Pretorius s farm near Graaff-Reinet, to Henri Bettelheim s eastern phantasy in Doornfontein, and those houses occupied by the inner circle of the Reformers These drawings are a valuable record, for while many of the houses illustrated are threatened with demolition, some have already suffered this fate. This is a book to be read and re-read, and treasured for the beauty of its text and illustrations.

Jameson's Raid: The prelude to the Boer War by Elizabeth Longford

Softcover, ISBN 9780868500782
Publisher: Jonathan Ball Publishers, Johannesburg, 2012
Condition- Good. 349 pages including: notes; short bibliography and an index. Launched in the early hours of the penultimate day of 1895, it has provided historians with juicy morsels to toy with ever since. Naturally, it caused enormous interest and controversy at the time, and, arguably was one of the main causes of the Boer War of 1899-1902. The Raid, led by Cecil Rhodes' lieutenant and confidant, Dr Jameson, was a crude attempt to settle the Transvaal problem of the 1890's by overthrowing Kruger's republic, with the help of the English-speaking Uitlanders of Johannesburg and the Rand, and establishing a pro-British government of some sort in its place. The plan was a disastrous flop: Jameson’s troopers of Rhodes' British South Africa Police Force were easily rounded up by the Boer Commandos, and the Uitlander uprising went off at half-cock; British policy in South Africa lay in ruins.

the-cowboy-capitalist-john-hays-hammond-the-american-west-and-the-jameson-raid-by-van-onselen-charles
The cowboy capitalist: John Hays Hammond, the American West and the Jameson raid by Van Onselen, Charles

The cowboy capitalist: John Hays Hammond, the American West and the Jameson raid by Van Onselen, Charles

Hardcover
ISBN 9781868427383 / 1868427382
Publisher: Jonathan Ball Publishing Pty (ZA) , 2017

Condition: Very Good+. It involved 500 British South Africa Company police launched from Rhodesia over the New Year weekend of 1895–96. Paul Kruger, for whom Rhodes had great personal hatred, was president of the South African Republic at the time. The raid was intended to trigger an uprising by the primarily British expatriate workers (known as Uitlanders) in the Transvaal but it failed.

The workers were referred to as The Johannesburg Conspirators. They were expected to recruit an army and prepare for an insurrection; however, the raid was ineffective, and no uprising took place. The results included embarrassment of the British government; the replacement of Cecil Rhodes as prime minister of the Cape Colony; and the strengthening of Boer dominance of the Transvaal and its gold mines. Also, the withdrawal of so many fighting men left Rhodesia vulnerable, one factor that led just a couple of months later to the Second Matabele War.
